Is the FODMAP diet the answer to your Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) or is there something else underlying your digestive woes?

FODMAP diets exclude dietary Fructose (some fruits sugars) and Fructans (some vegetables), Fructooligosacharrides (probiotics and fermented foods), Galactans (some beans/lentils) and Polyols (alcohol sugars and sweeteners).

Low FODMAP diets are frequently prescribed for people who are experiencing symptoms such as;

Abdominal distention

& Diarrhea

Eating high fructose foods can create extreme discomfort for some people who are unable to absorb fructose (sugar) in their small intestine. The undigested fructose ends up in the large intestine where it is rapidly devoured by bacteria who ‘ferment’ the fructose in order to break it down and this causes various gases such a methane and hydrogen to be formed leading to all of the above digestive issues.

The common denominator in these digestive disorders is very commonly Candida. Fructose malabsorption is inevitable when the body is dealing with Chronic Candidiasis which is fungal infection which creates cravings for sugar, bread and alcohol.

The more you feed the sugar cravings the worse the symptoms become. Removing sources of sugar from the diet does help but in the process many toxins are released from the die off of the Candida and this not only increases the cravings but also exacerbates pre-existing symptoms and create new ones.

In order to reclaim your health it’s necessary to remove these foods but also treat the gut to ensure that the digestive system is supported in eliminating the excess Candida and the toxins that it produces.
