A favourite amongst many, cocoa is not just a tasty treat. This special bean, grown in tropical climates, has many health benefits when consumed correctly. Its main benefits are associated with the cardiovascular system with potential benefits for cognition, diabetes, conditions of the nervous system and the liver. Since the focus of this month is circulation, let’s fill you in on what cocoa can do for your circulatory system.

Research suggests that consuming a higher amount of cocoa is associated with 10% lower risk of cardiovascular disease. This is potentially due to cocoa’s ability to improve endothelial function- which is an important factor in healthy circulation. Cocoa has also shown an ability to reduce blood pressure and cholesterol, allowing for blood to flow with ease through the arteries.

Cocoa can be generally stimulating as it does contain caffeine, this is important to note for those who are sensitive to stimulants and who are on medication for heart conditions as it can interact.
