Myofascial cupping or ‘cupping’ is a form of myofascial release, which aims to restore optimum function to soft tissues. Cupping uses negative pressure, or decompression techniques to stretch, lift, and separate the connective tissue (fascia) and muscle tissue. This is different to most other forms of myofascial release like massage, as they involve compression of these tissues to reduce tension and lengthen muscle fibres rather than decompression.

At Feeling Healthy we provide cupping therapy as part of our remedial massage treatments. We commonly use cupping in conjunction with other remedial massage techniques like deep tissue, trigger point therapy and stretching as well as applying movements patterns whilst the cups are in place over the soft tissue.

Cupping provides us a great tool to be able to enhance the treatment of our clients. It is very useful when the client is in a lot of pain and applying pressure to inflamed or sore areas isn’t ideal, cupping allows us to decompress the area and regain movement, control, and reduce pain at the same time.

Benefits of cupping:

  • Stretching of tissue which assists in releasing the tension and increasing range of
  • motion of joints
  • Can help reduce knots/adhesion in the muscle fibres to improve length and function
  • of the muscle
  • Increases hydration of connective tissue and muscle tissue
  • Increases blood flow and circulation and therefore nutrient delivery to tissues
  • Increases the movement of fluid which can help with swelling and fluid retention
  • Increases recovery from injury
  • Helps maintain soft tissue function

As you can see, cupping has many positive benefits to help assist the body in improving function, reducing pain, and rehabilitating injuries.

At Feeling Healthy we use the vacuum myofascial cupping in which cups are applied over the skin, and the tension and vacuum is created by our therapist using a cupping gun. This allows us complete control over the pressure of the vacuum and can be adjusted on the go to accommodate the client and improve the treatment.
